The first Stockholm Lecture on Child Law and Children's Rights in honour of Her Majesty Queen Silvia of Sweden will be held by Marta Santos Pais on the subject of “Human rights start with children's rights”.
As a tribute to Her Majesty Queen Silvia of Sweden and a recognition of Her Majesty’s invaluable contributions to the promotion of children’s rights and child law, Stockholm University has initiated a series of biannual lectures that will be delivered by the world’s most prominent scholars in the field of children’s rights.
The inaugural lecture in this series will be given by the eminent expert of children’s rights Marta Santos Pais, who is considered a pioneer of international efforts for the legal protection of children. Santos Pais was a member of the drafting group of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, and has also been involved in the development of other key international human rights standards. She was a member and Rapporteur of the Committee on the Rights of the Child in its very first years. In May 2009 she was appointed UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence against Children. She held this role for over ten years, acting as a high level global independent advocate and a bridge builder across regions, disciplines and sectors. With more than 30 years’ experience on human rights issues and legal matters, as well as engagement in United Nations and intergovernmental processes and research institutions, she was a Special Adviser to two major UN Studies, respectively on “Violence against Children” and on the “Impact of Armed Conflict on Children”.
